WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY CHIMNEY INSULATED?
WHY
Chimneys operate on the principle that hot air rises because it is less dense than the surrounding ambient cold air. That rising of hot gases creates a pressure difference called draft which draws combustion air into the appliance and expels the exhaust gas outside.
WHAT HAPPENS
When the fuel combusts the hot flue gases rise up the chimney and reduce in temperature. As the gases cool they’ll begin to condense. The condensation, which is corrosive, can reduce the lifespan of metal chimney systems. This is why it's important to maintain temperature within the flue.
THE BENEFITS
Maintaining optimum temperature within the chimney also provides clean combustion allowing the appliance to burn more efficiently and reduces the risk of sooty deposits in both chimney and appliance.
Aside from requiring less day to day cleaning improved combustion leads to improved fuel consumption and a reduced the risk of chimney fires.
